History

Warren County was founded in 1825 when it was separated from Sussex County. The county was named after Dr. Joseph Warren who fought in the battle of Bunker Hill. The county originally had the townships of Greenwich, Hardwick, Independence, Knowlton, Mansfield, Oxford and Pahaquarry. The Town of Belvidere was chosen as the county seat, and General Garrett D. Wall donated grounds for a county courthouse and public square in Belvidere. The county's freeholders had a brick courthouse constructed that is still in use today. The first commercial highway built in the United States, known as "Old Mine Road," is still in existence today and is a major visitor attraction in the county. The first area to be settled by European colonists was Pahaquarry Township. The area later became mostly federal and state parkland. In the early 1830s, the Morris Canal opened in New Jersey with 33 miles of the 102-mile route to Jersey City in Warren County. Villages such as Port Warren, Port Colden, Port Murray and Rockport were established due to their location along the canal. Railroads quickly replaced the canal and sped the development of industry within the county.
